PRAA Cultural Center, Chicago, IL

The Puerto Rican Arts Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing Puerto Rican culture.

The PRAA Cultural Center is an adaptive reuse of the abandoned Elbridge Fire Station located on Chicago’s northwest side. The Center provides space for public meetings and exhibitions, offices, art and music educational workshops, and public performances.

The major renovation required the interior to be completely gutted, leaving only the original building shell and first floor slab. The project includes new energy-efficient HVAC systems, windows, and doors. Additional green initiatives include ample natural daylight throughout the space, drought-resistant landscaping, a green roof with an Energy Star roofing membrane, Energy Star interior lighting, and low VOC paints and finishes.
